Innovating Pedagogy 2013

The Open University has produced its second innovation report which focuses on exploring new forms of teaching, learning and assessment, to guide educators and policy makers. It lists ten major innovations that it believes will influence the educational environment.
  1. MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses);
  2. Badges to accredit learning;
  3. Learning analytics;
  4. Seamless learning;
  5. Crowd learning;
  6. DIgital scholarship;
  7. Geo-learning;
  8. Learning from gaming;
  9. Maker culture;
  10. Citizen inquiry;
One key statement in the report is that “technologies may change, but the innovations in pedagogy bring lasting benefit”.

    2013 NMC Horizon Report for Higher Education

    The 2013 NMC Horizon Report for Higher Education makes for some interesting reading as usual. Its 6 technologies to watch are as follows:

    Near-term horizon (next 12 months):
    • Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
    • Tablet to computing
    Mid-Term horizon (2 to 3 years):
    • Games and gamification
    • Learning analytics
    Far-term horizon (4 to 5 years):
    • 3D printing
    • Wearable teachnology
    One of the key observations is ... "Simply capitalizing on new technology is not enough; the new models must use these tools and services to engage students on a deeper level." (p.9) To access the full report, click here.

    Ratouille Recipe

    Watched the movie recently so had a go at ratatouille. Here's what it looks like:

    Delicious. And here's the recipe.

    Ingredients
    • 1/4 cup olive oil, plus more as needed
    • 1 1/2 cups small diced yellow onion
    • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
    • 2 cups medium diced eggplant, skin on
    • 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
    • 1 cup diced green bell peppers
    • 1 cup diced red bell peppers
    • 1 cup diced zucchini squash
    • 1 cup diced yellow squash
    • 1 1/2 cups peeled, seeded and chopped tomatoes
    • 1 tablespoon thinly sliced fresh basil leaves
    • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley leaves
    • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
    Directions
    1. Set a large 12-inch saute pan over medium heat and add the olive oil. Once hot, add the onions and garlic to the pan. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they are wilted and lightly caramelized, about 5 to 7 minutes. Add the eggplant and thyme to the pan and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the eggplant is partially cooked, about 5 minutes. Add the green and red peppers, zucchini, and squash and continue to cook for an additional 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, basil, parsley, and salt and pepper, to taste, and cook for a final 5 minutes. Stir well to blend and serve either hot or at room temperature.
